I have used both methods, especially as pups. what are your preferences and what techniques do /did you use.?

Positive reinforcement all the way! I think a group class is critical for socialization and for the dog to learn to obey you in distracting circumstances, but this of course has to be continued by the owner at home for it to be successful.
Walter is a very sensitive dog and any kind of physical corrective methods, be it a choke chain or a tap on the head, would seriously upset him. A verbal correction is more than enough to get the job done. His favorite reinforcer is a head scratch. He doesn't even care about treats unless they are REALLY good (we save those for high-intensity situations), so most of our training was as simple as a pat on the head. He's a wonderful dog Smile
