Norm taking a nap... he's even cute when he's asleep. Wink

This is Norm's couch (futon) in our office

Norm with his "dad" (Mark)

Norm really isn't chubby, these photos make him look much heavier, he's actually very lean.

Thanks Cheri. Norm is big, but I think the perspective in the photos make him look even bigger. He does have a lovely head though. I posted two video clips of Norm's wobbly hocks (on another thread) if you'd like to see him move today. Unfortunately there isn't much change in his hocks, though his hips are stronger.

He's 33 inches (83 cm) at the withers and 167 lbs (76 kg) - he is weighed weekly before his therapy session. He has a nice head and decent bone, but he still a very lean Saint. I'm doing my best to keep him as light as possible... well as light as a Saint can be. He could easily carry another 20 lbs (10 kg) and he would look much nicer, but his hips wouldn't be happy. The photo makes him look chunkier, but I think that's just because he has so much loose skin.

oh i hope i didnt upset you! i didnt mean he looked fat! i keep mine on the leaner side ( much of which is noted by those who think st bernards should be big dogs (fat more like!!!)

he weighs the same as a couple of mine and less than one bred by me at over 90kilos but he still for some reason looks much bigger than them!????

i feel VERY strongly about overweight dogs - its a form of abuse as far as im concerned .... just as bad as underfeeding to some degree.

(rant over!!!)

in conclusion mrs munro i find norm guilty for being as LUSH as ever!!!!! lol!

Cheri you didn't upset me at all. I'm very paranoid when it comes to Norm's weight. After seeing the photos of him I had to check and double check him to make sure he's not as chunky as he looked in the photo. I had his vet and physiotherapist check his weight and they both agree that Norm is bordering on "skinny" (for a Saint) and he can't afford to lose any weight. I've had Newfs and one Great Dane and they just don't have the same amount of bone as Saints do. My Great Dane was 37 inches (94 cm) tall and 140 lbs (63.5 kg), he was a perfect weight. My Newfs have ranged between 90-150 lbs (40-68 kg) at their idea weight at fully mature adults. To have a young dog weigh as much as Norm amazes me... and it has sparked an obsession.

I'm so jealous!! I joke that I have a miniature Saint Bernard. Molson is only 29" at the withers and he is a year and a half. I think he's done growing. I wish he were bigger, but I love him all the same. Maybe my next one will be like Norm <3

Jess, be careful what you wish for. I think part of the reason that Norm has orthopedic problems is because of his size. I don't have much Saint experience, but I do know that smaller (but still to the standard) Newfs are generally MUCH more agile with fewer ortho issues than the jumbo version. Molson meets the standard and he's a gorgeous boy.

Our vet is amazed at how good Molson's hips are. He too said that he thinks it is because he is smaller, less weight on them.
Norm is a beautiful boy. I do think his wobbly hocks have gotten better though from looking at the two videos you posted. I adore looking at his pictures<3 Thank you for sharing them
